Hey Helpers! I’m back with another edition of the Around the HF World web series! In today’s post, I had the chance to interview one of the Brazilian members in the Help Force! And that person is the one and only… Malu! So, let’s start this interview and find out more things about Brazil!

The Country Interview
Hi Malu! Let’s start our journey by asking: What is your nationality? If you have more than one, please mention them.
Hiiii, I’m brazilian!
Very interesting! Can you share some traditions from Brazil with us?
Brazil is a big country, we have traditions from all around the world because much people back in the day took refuge here, that makes Brazil a country with a large diaspora.
Most holidays and customs revolve around Catholicism; however, we are too many people, so, there are also customs from paganism, mainly from African religions.
If I have to talk about two of our most beloved party’s it’ll be about Carnaval e Festa Junina.
Carnaval originated in Greece in the cults of Dionysus, were there’s lots of food and drinking involved, than it was mixed with Catholic lent and some portuguese traditions know as “entrudo” (a chaotic party). You mix all those things and have the actual carnaval, a time of the year to put the worries away, party like crazy in the streets, wear costumes, listening to classic carnaval music like marchinhas de carnaval or axé.
Festa Junina for instance it’s a festival that originally celebrates the summer solstice, usually held in June, but for us the customs were convenient because it’s winter here! It’s originally a pagan event, to celebrate good harvests and fertility, but it was alongside Catholicism that it took its current form, celebrating Saint Anthony, Saint John, and Saint Peter, as well as the simplicity of people who live in the countryside. The festival features a great abundance of food, mainly corn-based! It also includes music, dance, and even theater. The northern and northeastern regions of Brazil are where this festival is most famous and celebrated most seriously.

Wonderful traditions! What are some traditional Brazilian foods?
I think traditional foods that are almost only our are only coxinha (fried dough with chicken), brigadeiro (a simple chocolate truffle with sprinkles) and maybe acarajé (bean dough with shrimps, green tomatoes and more)
Our most famous dish is feijoada, a bean and meat stew, the most you let it cooking the better! We eat it with white rice (as almost everything), kale and oranges. The meats used are usually pork meat that are not use normally like ears, paws, tail…On our day to day we eat white rice and beans for lunch, always with lots of vegetables and some meat normally.
Ah, barbecues are normal here! Some families do it all weekend’s. Anything that calls for a celebration, the answer will most often be “let’s have a barbecue!”
Amazing! I have to try these if I ever get to visit Brazil! Is there any place/places in Brazil you recommend visiting?
Well, there’s the the usual like Rio de Janeiro to see the Cristo Redentor and Pão de Açúcar. São Paulo is out metropolis, here is where you’ll find all kinds of authentic culinary (Arab, Korean, Chinese, japanese, Italian…) in one place. Or even Curitiba, to visit the botanic garden or Oscar Niemeyer museum.
I recommend to go to Minas Gerais, as we all here agree that they have the best culinary of all, their food just always taste like home. Also recommend Maranhão, as they have our most breath taking beaches.
Maranhão
Interesting places to visit! Now, please rate your country in the three categories we discussed, using a scale of 1 to 10.
10/10 all of them, no doubts! All too good, can’t say anything against it.
Finally, would you recommend foreigners to visit Brazil?
I think so! We have great places here to visit, so much things to do and our people are always very welcoming. And, our most famous phrase on the internet is “come to Brazil” so… I think that’s what we want!
