WORLD OF CINEMA – Project Hail Mary

Hello all! I am Beanz, and it’s wonderful to meet you all. Now, I bring to you a new edition of our infamous WORLD OF CINEMA! I know we’ve all been waiting to hear about one of the world’s most talked-about movies lately, Project Hail Mary!

Introduction

This movie, which grossed more than 500 million at the box office worldwide, was the very thing that might’ve brought people back to the theatres after a 6-year decline in theatre attendance. Project Hail Mary is a book-to-movie adaptation of Andy Weir’s award-winning story. He gave us characters like Ryland Grace and heartwarming aliens like Rocky.

Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi genre film starring Ryan Gosling and his alien friend as it delves deeper into space travel, scientific discovery and friendships that transcend species.

Galactic Plot

A middle school science teacher wakes up alone on a spaceship in deep space. He has no idea how he got there or what his mission is. Two crew members lie dead beside him, victims of coma misuse during long-distance travel. The silence feels heavy as he realizes he is completely alone. He does not know how to pilot the spacecraft while some of his memories slowly begin to return to him. He remembers the mission’s terrifying purpose. The Sun is dying…every sun across the universe is dying. They are being consumed by small black energy spheres made of pure, concentrated energy. In large numbers, they could even power the spacecraft itself.

What Grace did for humanity is not something all of us could hope to do; his heroic tale isn’t one of whimsy or excitement, it’s sad. Grace gave up his life for this mission, or what he thought was left of it; he boarded, piloted and completed the mission alone when his crew members died. He must have been alone in the vastness of space for 15 years or so before seeing another living creature. You and I can’t imagine how draining, how empty and silent it must have been for him. A lot(truly a lot) was heavy on his shoulders, he had an impossible mission ahead of him, and he had to persevere. It speaks to humanity’s unshakable resilience that we keep going forward.

Mixed feelings about the ships in the movie. : r/ProjectHailMary

His mission is to travel across space to find and harvest the one thing that could save his planet. On a distant planet in another galaxy lives the predator of the Sun-eating substance. Along his amnesia-prone journey, he crosses paths with a ship much, much larger than his own, more technologically advanced and inhabited by aliens. Or more like “Alien” as he comes to meet this singular alien, who ventured the same journey as Grace. His sun is also dying, finding that this alien means no harm and in fact is friendly, Grace and newly named Rocky work together and put their minds together to help each other save their planets.

Despite Grace’s stressful time in space, what really humanises him more than the fact that he is indeed a human is his slow but willful acceptance of a friend in the middle of nothingness. After an isolation of 10 years, even the appearance of extra-terrestrial life itself would terrify anyone. His bond with Rocky was stronger than any he’d had back on Earth, or he’d have more wanting to go back. We watch how this bond transcends species. Their partnership and teamwork on their shared goal in mind bridged a gap between them, requiring them to work together, and there was simply no other way for the mission to have been completed without it.

In their growing friendship, they find the planet along with the organism that could kill the sun-eaters and part ways. If that sounded like a dull ending, you’re right, we didn’t end there. A predator organism escapes its Xenonite container and targets the ship’s fuel, the Sun-eating substance. Grace stops it and locks it away, but realizes his aliens’ ship is made of Xenonite.

Grace ships the organism back to Earth in a capsule and races to Rocky’s aid, saving him and the organism to save his planet from the Sun’s death and only enough fuel to get it there. They go together to Rocky’s planet, where Grace is then home. The mission saves the Sun ten years later after a 44-year journey, yet Grace’s clear skin shows no sign of aging. Space travel is a wonder.

The movie’s science is not realistic, and its timeline is close to the present day. He boards the spaceship in 2023, travels for about 44 years, and saves the Sun in 2067. This timeline requires technological advancements far beyond what currently exists. For comparison, the interior of Artemis II shows how cramped conditions can be, with four crew members living in a small space for only 10 days. Extending that to 16,060 days highlights how unrealistic the living conditions in the film would be. It’s unimaginable.

Now the alien that Rocky was is also that of something I haven’t thought of before, a strong rock shape with the limbs and a bug-like body. One that uses frequency and chirping click sounds to communicate in a language that can be deciphered electronically. It pushes the bounds of what could be real or science fiction.

Finally, I really, really enjoyed this movie, even if it’s not perfect(which I think it is, btw, don’t even). I’m not a big Ryan Gosling fan, but this made me think differently because of the tours and his acting. I could clearly see how versatile he really is, and it’s impressive. But then again, I’ve always loved movies. #WatchMoreMovies #LookAtMe #Hi
