Song of the week #43 If You Don’t Like the Story Write Your Own by Witt Lowry

Hey there helpers! Welcome back to the Song of the Week series. This week I am joined by Grigo! He recommended the song If You Don’t Like the Story Write Your Own by Witt Lowry

Here’s what he had to say about the song:

That song resonates strongly with me, and the title alone speaks directly to where I am: my life is not finished, and the painful chapters do not get to be the whole book. I seem to be drawn to things that feel hopeful but not fake-happy. Not “everything is perfect,” but more like: I have been hurt, I am scared, but I still want to believe the future can be beautiful.
The song also strongly speaks towards my current feelings, and connects with the idea behind a new playlist I’m working on, titled “Under Distant Stars.” The aim is to create a playlist that makes you feel like love is possible, the future is unknown, and that this is a new chapter. Lowry’s song fits that perfectly. It’s not just a song about romance, it feels like a reminder that I’m still allowed to become someone new, even if my past has made me cautious.
I tend to think of life in a very narrative way: chapters, quests, and places I haven’t reached yet. So a song about rewriting my own story feels personal. It gives shape to what I already feel: that I do not just want to survive the past; I want to turn it into something meaningful.
I have been hurt, I am afraid of being hurt again, but I still believe my story can become something beautiful if I keep going and choose to write it myself.
As the album’s title track, it doesn’t disappoint. There are a lot of feelings from the get-go, with serene instrumentation juxtaposed with frustrated, emotional vocals. The energy ramps up as the frustration builds, and we are hit with a pause in the song where the energy settles back down. The lyrics hit hard, and you really understand the artist’s perspective and feel his emotions deeply. The artist talks about struggles and overcoming adversity, and it resonates with anyone who has also experienced hardship. There’s a level of catharsis listening to the song as the energy builds and falls as we experience emotional outbursts followed by quiet reflection. A great song recommendation from Grigo!
