Song of the Week #13

Oh my goodness!! Plotter is here with his salad man. A fantastic guest with us this week, with a wonderful song. Our very own raccoon and Admiral, Alex has suggested Liquid Smooth by Mitski!

Here’s what he had to say about the song:

The song literally kills me every time I hear it. It has not only an incredible message, but also Mitski’s vocals are absolutely astonishing. I don’t know how she managed to get this song to be quite literally perfect. You can hear the pain, the sorrow, the hope in her voice throughout. The instrumental matches perfectly, it creates such an unsettling atmosphere, I don’t think I even have the words to describe it any better.

Mitski really has a way to make everyone feel engaged within the tunes. She manages to make it feel as though we are in the music itself. This song was quite intriguing. I’m not sure about others but when I first heard it, it reminded me of an old structure collapsing and crumbling to pieces in front of the listener. It is mainly about her poetic view on how society treats women according to some people. There is a lyric in Japanese ‘Kuzurete yuku maeni’ which means ‘Before it collapses’. In this case, it seems as though she is indicating that she wants to be noticed before her perfection is tainted.

Mistki is a Japanese-American singer-songwriter. I find it miraculous that she self-published her first two albums. She mainly revolves around the genres Indie and punk rock with the occasional folk rock too. Liquid Smooth is from the album, Lush which was in fact her very first album! She has been doing very well since then. Some of her popular albums include ‘Be the Cowboy’ and ‘Bury Me at Makeout Creek’. Mitski has also won a Libera award for her the song ‘Nobody’ which I’m sure many have heard of. The song is available on platforms such as Deezer, Spotify and YouTube. As always, here’s a playlist filled with songs as beautiful as Liquid Smooth. Tune in for the next one!
