Song of the Week #12

12!! My favourite number, and guess what! One of my favourite people gave me a song suggestion too! This week, we have Maya, our lovely Second in Command, who has suggested Hey Julie by Fountains of Wayne!

Here’s what she had to say about the song:

It’s about this girl this guy meets, its like a love song :ono:and it was like one of the first songs my uncle showed me and I actually liked.

How sweet! Firstly, I love when anybody shows me what they have heard and enjoyed listening to. Always a lot of sentimental value. Additionally, This tune is such a mood lifter! Reminds me of picnics and road trips too. The girl according to the lyrics sounds like the guy’s lifeline. The guitar makes a lovely melody. The percussion is an interesting choice for the type of song but I love how it compliments the peaceful tune. This song was on the album ‘Welcome Interstate Managers‘. It was released in 2003. The album cover also intrigues me, it has a very interesting set-up of men who look like they’re in a meeting at a round table. The table being round, although hollow in the middle reminded me of Arthur’s round table of knights.

Fountains of Wayne was an American band which played rock and power pop, formed in New York City in 1995. The band included members Chris Collingwood, Adam Schlesinger, Jody Porter, and Brian Young. They had disbanded in 2013 but got together for a tribute concert after Adam Schlesinger had passed away due to complications when he contracted COVID-19. They made fantastic tracks however their most well-known song is the 2003 single “Stacy’s Mom.” It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America as well as nominated for Best Vocal Pop Performance at the 2004 Grammys. What a status! The song is available on platforms such as Deezer, Spotify and YouTube. As always, here’s a playlist packed with all sorts of good stuff that sound just like this song and more. That’s all for now, tune in for the next one!
